Hampton School is looking for an enthusiastic and well-qualified Physics teacher to join its successful department from January 2027. This is a full-time maternity-cover role in a highly academic school with a particularly strong uptake of Physics at Sixth Form.

1. The role is a full-time Teacher of Physics maternity-cover position, starting in January 2027.
2. Hampton School is an academically selective independent school for boys, based on a 28-acre site in Hampton, South West London.
3. Physics is taught as a separate science from the start rather than as part of a general Science course.
4. The Physics department is substantial, with 11 Physics teachers supported by two technicians.
5. Teaching takes place across eight well-equipped Physics laboratories grouped together within the school.
6. All pupils take Edexcel International GCSE Physics rather than a combined or double-award Science qualification.
7. Physics results are exceptionally strong. In 2026, 91% of pupils achieved grades 8 or 9 in IGCSE Physics.
8. Physics is also very popular in the Sixth Form, with large numbers choosing the subject at A-level.
9. A-level students follow OCR Physics A. In 2026, 69% of candidates achieved an A* or A grade.
10. A-level classes are small, averaging around 11 pupils and normally no larger than 13. Classes are taught by two teachers working in parallel.
11. There is plenty for a Physics teacher to become involved with beyond normal lessons, including the Institute of Physics Challenges and Olympiad, clubs, competitions, trips and extension work.
12. The department also provides additional Oxbridge preparation, with pupils regularly progressing to courses including Physics, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Materials Science.
13. The successful teacher can expect up to 30 forty-minute lessons each week. The timetable would normally also include a games afternoon and a form-tutor period.
14. Hampton is looking for someone who can teach Physics enthusiastically through to Sixth Form and stretch highly able pupils. A good honours degree in Physics, Engineering or Natural Sciences is preferred, although related subjects may also be considered.
