Teaching does not become better simply because every worksheet, PowerPoint and activity has been created from scratch.
Teachers already work long hours, and preparation can easily expand into evenings and weekends. Reducing unnecessary planning is therefore not about taking shortcuts. It is about protecting time for explanation, assessment, relationships and responding to pupils.
Thoughtful planning matters. Repeatedly creating elaborate documents simply to show that planning has taken place does not necessarily improve teaching.

1. Begin with the curriculum, not a blank PowerPoint
Before opening a new presentation, decide what pupils need to know, understand and be able to do by the end of the lesson.

14. Share the intellectual work, not just the files
Effective collaborative planning is more than placing dozens of unrelated resources in a shared folder.
A department might divide responsibility for:

15. Stop producing resources mainly to prove that you have worked
Detailed lesson plans, excessive annotations and decorative presentations can become visible evidence of effort, but visible effort is not necessarily pupil learning.

- Will pupils learn more because I am doing this?
- Will it improve my explanation?
- Will it help me identify misunderstanding?
- Will pupils use it more than once?
- Is this required, or have we simply always done it?
- Is there a quicker way to achieve the same purpose?
A simple, well-sequenced lesson can be more effective than an impressive-looking collection of resources.
16. Improve one component each time you teach a topic
Do not attempt to rebuild an entire unit every year.
After teaching it, choose one improvement:
- replace a weak explanation;
- reorder two concepts;
- add a better example;
- remove an activity that did not help;
- improve one assessment question;
- clarify practical instructions;
- add support for a common misconception;
- strengthen the final review.
This gradual approach produces sustainable improvement.
It also avoids the cycle in which a teacher spends hours rebuilding a unit, teaches it once, becomes exhausted and then starts another reconstruction the following week.
Good curriculum development is usually cumulative rather than dramatic.
17. Save your time for the parts of teaching that cannot be downloaded
A resource cannot notice that half the class has misunderstood. It cannot decide to pause, ask a better question, reteach an idea or reassure a pupil who has lost confidence.
The teacher’s most valuable work includes:
- explaining clearly;
- listening to pupils;
- checking understanding;
- responding to misconceptions;
- selecting the next question;
- giving useful feedback;

- adapting during the lesson.
Reducing unnecessary resource creation protects time for this responsive work.
A final thought
Not reinventing the wheel does not mean teaching the same lesson forever. It means beginning with what is already sound, adapting it intelligently and improving it over time.
The strongest teachers are not necessarily those with the most elaborate PowerPoints or the fullest shared-drive folders. They are often those who know what pupils need to learn, choose appropriate materials and use their energy where it makes the greatest difference.
Reuse the structure. Keep the strong explanation. Adapt the question. Improve the weak section. Share what works.
Your pupils need thoughtful teaching, not evidence that you stayed up until midnight designing another worksheet.
